Researches carried out by Cambridge University showed possibility for same sex reproduction, according to the study published in Cell. And it’s reported that the experiment has been successfully done in mice, in which the first mice baby from same sex parents was given to birth. Many homosexual couple and the parents who are faced with infertility problem hold great interest in the new study. It seems that humans are changing the nature’s law.
There are a number of studies in laboratories working on the transformation of eggs and sperms, as well as creating genetically male cells but are produced from eggs or in the reverse way. Some of them succeeded and were successfully tried on mice. But the experiment on human are still in the first stage where the engineered sperm cells from the stem cells of five adults in good condition in lab are compared with the cells from aborted fetuses for quality. The comparison proved that the manually involved cells are healthy and viable.
The first stage is the most difficult but also the most important stage of the whole process. It gave evidence that the reproduction from same sex is feasible and it overcame the most complicated technology the whole experiment involved. After the first phase, scientists found ways to foster the very early human stem cell in laboratory condition.
However, the experiments will encounter more difficulties in the later phases as there are no mature technologies and equipment needed for the cellular reprogramming, artificial chromosome and other processes. But it held promise by the scientists who participant in the study.
Still there is a long way for the technology to go as serious issues remain unsolved, among which the safety problem is the most basic and also the most important one. The same sex reproduction process requires cells engineer, but the changes happened to cells in the creation stage can’t be ensured to be safe in the future as them duplicate, and it’s estimated that it’s possible for them to grow uncontrolled and developed into cells causing mutations.
Furtherly, there remain ethic and religious controversy. Many religious parties hold a quite firm attitude against same sex marriage or relationship, let along the same sex reproduction.
Even though, the benefits of the new technique can’t be neglected. As a nature of human beings, reproduction plays a vital role in many people’s life, and it’s a great source of happiness. Having a child of own is of more significance in eastern countries. To balance the shortcomings and advantages, safer techniques and related regulations even laws are required once the new technology can be applied into human bodies.
