Well explained and thorough, April 9, 1999
This book is mainly aimed at the graduate student entering the field of photoactive proteins. The main focus of the book is rhodopsins and bacteriorhodopsins. As a graduate student studying the photocycle of bacteroiorhodopsin, I found a lot of information that I would have had to spend a long time searching for in the literature. The book starts off by explaining the proteins’ structure and function, then goes on to explain the types of experiments that have been carried out and the information about the mechanisms and function that they have afforded. There are a few chapters explaining the optoelectronic and photophysical applications of these proteins. There are about 150 patents of bacteriorhodopsin in biomolecular electronics – proving that the descibed applications are not just ‘pie in the sky’ but are realistic possibilities.
For anyone who is planning to study this area, or are interested in the way these proteins will be used in bioelectronics applications, I would recommend this book for the price. Many textbooks that I have only used for one class and never picked up again have cost much more than this, so this is good value.
Also, the literature referenced is extensive, so you can look up the original papers if necessary.
