Metabolic Regulation: A Human Perspective
This important new edition of a successful book conveys a modern and integrated picture of metabolism and metabolic regulation. It gives a global picture while avoiding too much detail and has been widely accepted as the text of choice across a number of courses worldwide.Containing much new material, this new edition covers in an integrated way: concepts and mechanisms, digestion and intestinal absorption, organs and tissues, endocrine organs and hormones, the integration of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, the nervous system and metabolism, lipoprotein metabolism, diabetes mellitus, energy balance and body weight regulation and how the body copes with some extreme situations. The author, Keith Frayn, who has many years ‘ experience teaching and researching in this subject, has written a book of great clarity, which is an extremely valuable tool for scientists, practitioners and students working and studying across a broad range of allied health sciences including nutrition, dietetics, sports science and nursing.
Univ. of Oxford, UK. Examines in detail at how molecules, cells, and tissues operate collectively in human health and disease, using an approach known as ‘integrated physiology’. Discusses concepts and mechanisms, digestion and intestinal absorption, organs and tissues, endocrine organs and hormones, and more. For researchers and practitioners. Previous edition: c1996. Human Metabolism 101 – a great book , October 14, 2006
Professor Frayn did an awesome job to discuss & present a subject as dry as the human metabolism in a way which is easily accesible not only to biologists and medical doctors, but to educated layman as well.
The approach taken by the book is fully integrative, and discuss human metabolism in context of human physiology. This is what sets this book apart!! Its not yet another biochemistry text which study the metabolic pathways , its so much more.
Personal trainers , athletes , individuals interested in human performance and sport physiology will find this book very atractive and usefull in understanding key concepts of metabolism and metabolic pathways, organism repsonse to various nutritional plans, extremes like starvation & the metabolic changes during intense physical exercise. Human metabolism is a important component of sports and training, and by reading this book, many of its mysteries will be revealed.
Very good value.
