Book Description

No wonder it’s so hard to lose weight — our bodies are designed to keep weight on at all costs; it’s a matter of survival. It’s embedded in our DNA. Our diet has changed dramatically over the past ten thousand years, but our genetic blueprint has not — our bodies are not designed to process the types of food we are fed today. It’s like putting diesel fuel into a regular car — it just won’t work. And making matters worse is the fact that diets don’t work either: less than 6 percent of weight-loss attempts succeed. The average person who goes on a diet actually gains five pounds. But a medical revolution is under way, finally showing us precisely how the powerful forces that keep weight on can actually be reprogrammed to automatically burn fat and keep weight off for good. The concept is simple. By learning how to work with our bodies instead of against them, we can ignite the natural fat-burning furnaces that lie dormant within us. For the first time ever, Dr. Mark Hyman makes this new science of weight loss available to the general public. This medical revolution is based on a groundbreaking concept called nutrigenomics — the science of how food talks to our genes. This science is actually startlingly simple. Food contains information and instructions for our bodies — eat the right foods and send instructions of weight loss and health; eat the wrong foods and send messages of weight gain and disease. After spending the last ten years conducting pioneering, hands-on research with over two thousand patients at Canyon Ranch, one of the world’s leading health resorts, Dr. Hyman has discovered the seven fundamental causes of obesity. While fad diets have identified one or two of these causes, never before have they all been integrated into a single, simple plan for automatic weight loss — this is the promise of UltraMetabolism.

UltraMetabolism is an easy-to-follow eight-week plan to help you lose weight based on your own unique genetic needs. Since each of our bodies is different and may require more or less of certain nutrients to awaken our fat-burning DNA, Dr. Hyman shows you exactly how to customize the program for your own particular needs. The program includes menus, recipes, and shopping lists, as well as recommendations for supplements and exercise and lifestyle treatments designed to create a healthy metabolism — an UltraMetabolism — permanent weight loss, and lifelong health.

Drop pounds and keep then off – From someone who was able to banish more than 200 lbs and kept them off, July 13, 2006

Let me start saying that I have read a lot of books on weight loss, and this is one of best book on this subject. I like it, it is an effective and informative tool, but I disagree in part with its title: "..: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss". Weight Loss is not a simple matter, since it takes commitment and discipline to achieve real and lasting results. Once we accept this we are ready to turn advices into habits.

My own successful personal experience in weight loss is based on strategies to boost metabolism. Don’t stress yourself, eat frequently, eat just what you need each time, and choose wisely what you are going to eat, supplement your diet. Yet simple and it works. I loss more than 200 lbs and shrink my waist (from 44 to 32) in about eight weeks, and I have been able to keep in good shape since then. Every single aspect of my life has improved since then.

As soon as you look at the Table of Contents of this book, you find that every single topic is useful for anyone. This is not a book designed for academia or scientist, is for persons like you and me, we are either worry about our health or our appearance, and we look for practical advices, solutions and directions, we are not interested in test results or scientific data.

Based on my own personal experience I can recommend another tools that you may want to consider, to complement this book and your strategies for boosting your metabolism, loosing weight, and even more important keeping that weight off are:

– A Body Fat Monitor or Scale. This will help you monitor your progress, to assure that the weight you are loosing is fat (fat lost = increased metabolism) and not muscle, water or bone mass (decreased metabolism).
– A Heart Rate Monitor Wrist Watch. This is an excellent tool that will help you monitor and control your Heart Rate in order to keep yourself in a burning fat state (increased metabolism).
– "Heart Monitor Training for the Complete Idiot", a primer on the use of Heart Rate Monitors for health improvement or weight control.
– "The ABS Diet", which is another very practical, readable, insightful, and inspirational book.

I am 39 years old, With the help of this book and the tools I mentioned not only I went fro size 44 to size 32 pants, but also obtained substantial benefits that included weight control, cardiovascular improvements, lowered blood pressure, and improved muscular-skeletal strength and flexibility, but also the myriad of mental and psychological benefits derived from being in the best shape of my life.

Keep in mind that loosing those extra pounds are just part of the equation, you also need a plan that helps you keeping them off. Anything you choose to do that increases your metabolism is in the right direction. A high metabolic rate will keep you burning calories (and fat) all day long. And this book is all about boosting your metabolism.
