Technetium is a chemical element with an atomic number of 43 and an atomic weight of 99. In nature, it is produced via the fission of uranium or the bombardment of molybdenum. All its isotopes are radioactive. The most common isotope in nature is technetium-99, which can emit short-lived gamma radiation (half-life: 6.03 hr, 140 keV gamma rays). It is used in nuclear medicine for cancer diagnoses. It is used in imaging and functional studies of various organs, such as brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, skeleton, and blood. Another isotope, technetium-95m, is used as a radioactive tracer in plant and animal systems. It has a longer half-life (i.e. 61 days). Symbol: Tc.
