A copper-containing oxidoreductase enzyme found in plant and animal tissues that catalyzes the oxidation of tyrosine into melanin and other pigments.
Supplement
This enzyme is found in plants and animal tissues where it is involved in the production of brown and black pigments (melanin) through oxidation of tyrosine. The lack of tyrosinase activity is responsible for albinism.
Synonym: monophenol monooxygenase.
