The process in which the alkyl group is added or substituted from one molecule to another.
Supplement
The alkyl group may be transferred as an alkyl carbonation, a free radical, etc., as in the reaction of alkenes with alkanes to make high-octane fuels.
Alkylation is also used in chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells by damaging DNA.
