Ascaricides are drugs administered to hosts infested with Ascaris roundworm. Ascaris is a genus of parasitic nematodes that often dwell in the intestines of the host. The larval phase of Ascaris roundworm is capable of migrating through the body when the larva hatches from the egg. The larva is ought to reach the gut where it will further develop and reach its maturity. Some larvae though may migrate to other body parts such as liver and lungs. In the lungs, the larvae may cause pulmonary swelling resulting in the shortness of breath. It may also cause blockage of other visceral organs that leads to organ inflammation and enlargement. Roundworms that reached the gut, particularly the small intestines, may also cause intestinal blockage when they form a bolus. The infestation of such roundworms, depending on the number of thriving worms, could lead to the malnutrition and poor development, especially of a young host. Treatment of ascariasis is done with the administration of pharmaceutical drugs called ascaricides that can kill the roundworm but does not harm the host. Some of the common ascaricides are mebendazole, piperazine, albendazole, thiabendazole, santonin, etc.
