A stimulant laxative given either orally or rectally. If given orally, a bowel movement usually results in 6 to 8 hours. bisacodyl may be given rectally as either a suppository or a mini-enema. For suppositories, one or two suppositories are inserted into the rectum three to four inches (finger length) and the recipient will usually experience a bowel movement within 15 to 45 minutes. The mini-enema consists of approximately 1 ounce of liquid and usually results in a bowel movement within 5 to 20 minutes. Retaining the suppository or enema for at least 15 minutes is recommended for best results.
