Bisacodyl enema

An enema containing the stimulant laxative bisacodyl usually given to relieve constipation or prior to a bowel examination. Bisacodyl is most commonly given as a pre-packaged, mini-enema containing approximately an ounce of liquid bisacodyl. The recipient lies on their side or, if health allows, can assume the knee-chest position to receive the enema. The knee-chest position can be uncomfortable to maintain for more than a few minutes. Therefore after administration in the knee-chest position the patient may change positions and lie on their left side.
Although the recipient may experience an urge to evacuate in as little as 5 minutes, the enema is more effective if a waiting period of 15 to 20 minutes is observed before evacuation takes place.
