Compensatory polycythemia

A secondary polycythemia characterized by an increased production of red blood cells to compensate for the chronically low oxygen levels, for example as a result of prolonged residence at high altitudes, congenital heart disease, pulmonary emphysema, etc.
This form of polycythemia is a normal adaptation that happens in individual with prolonged exposure to anoxic or hypoxic conditions.
