Cytopathic effect

A degenerative change in the appearance of cells, especially in tissue culture when exposed to viruses, toxic agents or non-viral infections
The occurrence of cytopathic effect is observed in cell cultures in order to identify viral infection. However, cytopathic effect has been shown to occur also when exposed to certain non-viral infections.
