Eagle syndrome

Eagle syndrome
(Medical: syndrome) Named after dr. Eagle in 1937, who discovered that facial, throat and neck pain may be due to one or both of the styloid processes being inflammed and/or enlarged or elongated due to calcification, or hardening. The styloid processes are two spike-like projections that come off the base of the skull on both the left and right sides, just below each ear Canal, very close to the large arteries in the neck. During swallowing, pain may be felt from the throat tissues rubbing against the inflammed structures. pain relief may be achieved with anti-inflammatory drugs, although surgery to remove part of, or all, of the spike may be indicated in some cases, where total relief can be more permanent.
