Fleet Enema

A small volume enema consisting of about 4 ounces of water and saline in a ready to use plastic bottle. The usual procedure is for the enema to be adminsitered with the recipient lying on their left side, or in the knee-chest position. The nozzle is inserted slowly into the rectum and the bottle is squeezed until most of the liquid is in the rectum. The recipient should maintain the position until the urge to evacuate is strong, usually 2 to 5 minutes. If the enema was given to relieve constipation, then one application is usually enough. however, if the purpose is to clear the bowel for a medical examination a second enema may be required.
