In humans, the heterogametic sex is the male. The gametes produced may contain either X-chromosome or Y-chromosome.
In other animal species, such as some birds and reptiles, the heterogametic sex is the female. They have two dissimilar sex chromosomes: a W chromosome and a Z chromosome.
