(1) The posterior portion of the alimentary canal of certain adult vertebrates in which it is continuous with the midgut, and thereby includes the posterior structures of large intestine (such as distal transverse colon, splenic flexure, descending colon, and sigmoid colon) and the rectum
(2) The portion of the embryonic alimentary canal that gives rise to the colon and rectum; epigaster
