Homeodomain

Definition
noun, plural: homeodomains
A protein domain consisting of 60 amino acid residues encoded for by a homeobox. It is commonly found in transcription factors. Its function is to bind to specific sequence on a gene, which either activates or represses gene expression.

Homeodomain folds induce cell differentiation by initiating the cascades of coregulated genes required to produce individual tissues and organs. They are exclusive in multicellular, organ-forming eukaryotes.
