Malic enzyme

The enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of (S)-malate to pyruvate, with the concomitant release of carbon dioxide and conversion of NADP+ to NADPH.
This enzyme catalyzes the chemical reaction as follows:
(S)-malate + NADP+ → pyruvate + CO2 + NADPH
Also called:

  • (S)-malate:NAD+ oxidoreductase (decarboxylating) (chemical name)
  • pyruvic-malic carboxylase
  • NAD+-specific malic enzyme
  • NAD+-malic enzyme

User Contributions / Comments:

  • An enzyme which catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of malate to pyruvate and carbon dioxide concomitantly reducing NADP+ to NADPH. The NADPH generated by malic enzyme is used for the reductive biosynthesis of molecules such as fatty acids.
