noun, plural: Meissner’s corpuscles
A rounded, globular structure found in the papillae of the skin (especially concentrated in fingers, lips, and toes) that serves as a mechanoreceptor particularly sensitive to light touch (vibrations lower than 50 Hertz).
These corpuscles were discovered by the anatomist Georg Meissner (hence the name).
In human skin, these corpuscles were found to wane in number as the person ages (i.e. when touch sensitivity for small probes is lost gradually with age).
These sensory receptors are capable of detecting touch or vibration that is light (lower than 50 Hz) because they are situated in the dermis only superficially.
