Myocyte enhancer factor 2C gene is mapped on chromosome 5q14 that induced during myogenic differentiation and has a strict tissue specific pattern of expression. It is a target site of diverse proteins that regulates transcription in an array of cell types. It also needed for appropriate growth of megakaryocytes and platelets for bone marrow B-lymphopoiesis as well as implicated in neurogenesis and progress of cortical structural design.
Myocyte enhancer factor 2C involved in several transcriptional complexes linked to varied heredity of acute myeloid leukemia as well as in the immature subgroup of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia thereby, plays a significant role in hematopoietic system. It binds to the MEF-2 site with high similarity which able to turn on transcription of a reporter gene associated to tandem copies of such particular site. It is highly enriched in skeletal muscle, brain and spleen.
Myocyte enhancer factor 2C is important in hippocampal-dependent learning and memory via suppressing the excitatory synapses thus, regulating basal synaptic transmission. It is also critical for typical neuronal development, allocation and electrical action in the neocortex.
