The scientific study of the neural mechanisms of the human brain that control the development, the acquisition, and the use of language
Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system and is concerned with the structure, development, function, chemistry, pharmacology, and pathology of the nervous system. Modern tools and technologies (e.g. molecular biology, electrophysiology, computational methods, etc.) led to the advancement of research on nervous system. As a result, neuroscience is now comprised of various sub-fields. One of its sub-disciplines is the neurolinguistics.
Neurolinguistics is a science that studies the neural mechanisms of the human brain with the purpose of understanding and exploring the development, the acquisition, and the use of language. It makes use of aphasiology, brain imaging, electrophysiology, or computer modeling in its research and evaluation. It works closely with neuroscience, linguistics, cognitive science, neurobiology, neuropsychology, computer science, and communication disorders.
Some of the areas of interests are speech sounds (e.g. how the brain differentiate speech sounds from the background noise), organization of sounds in language (e.g. how phonology of a language is represented in the brain), word morphology and lexicology (how the brain stores and access known words), construction of multiple word utterances, and semantics (e.g. how the brain combines words into sentences).
