A type of mutation that does not result in the death or decreased reproductive capability of an organism instead it accumulates in the gene pool and increases the amount of genetic variation.

For example when a butterfly carrying genetic mutation and results in a favourable colour change, the chances of surviving and producing its own offspring may be better and in time leads to more butterflies carrying and expressing this mutation.
