or 3,5-Dihydroxytoluene, is a white, crystalline, organic compound that is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether, and with the formula: C6H3 (CH3)(OH) 2.
Supplement
It may be found in many lichens including Rocella tinctoria and Lecanora, and formed by fusing extract of aloes with potash.
Its oxidation with the ammoniacal solution results in the forming of orcein, the chief constituent of the natural dye archil.
Synonym: 3,5-dihydroxytoluene.
