A drug capable of enhancing the effects mediated by acetylcholine in the peripheral nervous system, or that is capable of producing, altering, or releasing acetylcholine, especially from parasympathetic nerve endings.

This agent or drug may act directly, i.e. by stimulating the acetylcholine receptors such as nicotinic or muscarinic receptors, or indirectly, i.e. by inhibiting cholinesterase, promoting the release of acetylcholine.
