(obstetrics) The number of times a female has given birth
In obstetrics, parity is used to record a woman’s obstetrical history. In epidemiology, women are classified based on the number of infants delivered by a woman. The following terms are used:

  • nullipara – a woman that has not yet given birth
  • primipara – a woman that has given birth at one time
  • multipara – a woman that has given birth more than once

Word origin: Latin paritas, from pariō (give birth)
