Postsynaptic potential

A change in the membrane potential of the postsynaptic cell caused by the action of neurotransmitters released by the presynaptic cell.
A postsynaptic potential is a graded potential whose function is to determine if the action potential is initiated or inhibited. Thus, a postsynaptic potential may be an inhibitory postsynaptic potential or excitatory postsynaptic potential.
