Prednisolone is one of the examples of a glucocorticoid. A glucocorticoid is a substance involved in the carbohydrate metabolism. For instance, it promotes gluconeogenesis, i.e. the metabolic process in which glucose is formed from non-carbohydrate precursors. It may be produced naturally (mainly, by the adrenal cortex) or synthetically. It exerts action to the cell by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor.
Prednisolone is a glucocorticoid with a chemical formula of C21H28O5. It is a synthetic glucocorticoid used to treat inflammation and allergies. It is also used to treat autoimmune disorders (e.g. Hodgkin’s disease, leukemia, asthma, multiple sclerosis, dermatitis, etc.). It is also given to patients as treatment against lymphomas. It is the drug of choice for all conditions in which routine systemic corticosteroid therapy is indicated, except adrenal deficiency states.
Its pharmacological roles are as steroidal anti-inflammatory agent and antineoplastic agent. It comes in different forms. It can be administered as a topical cream, eye drop, orally, or by injection.
Possible side effects are nausea, bone loss, weakness, increased risk to infection, and easy bruising.
