A psychologist is a professional expert or a specialist in psychology. Psychology is the science of human or animal mind or behavior. It is a branch of social science (i.e. the science that studies the society and human behavior in it). Psychologists are conducting counseling, practicing in clinical settings, working in school or industrial settings, or involved in therapeutic roles. In scientific research, psychologists may be doing studies on a wide range of topics on mental processes and behavior.
A psychologist has an educational background in psychology (i.e. typically, a master’s or a doctorate degree). There are several sub-fields of psychology and therefore have specific types of psychologists as well. For instance, a specialist in clinical psychology is called a clinical psychologist. Clinical psychology is a subfield in psychology that is concerned with the diagnosis and the treatment of personality and behavioural disorders. Clinical psychologists therefore are often involved in administering and interpreting psychological assessment and testing as well as conducting research in psychology. Another example is school psychologist. A school psychologist is a professional that applies the principles of school psychology (a sub-field of psychology comprised of educational psychology, developmental psychology, community psychology, clinical psychology, and applied behavioral analysis). A school psychologist works closely in collaboration with educators and parents with the aim of meeting the behavioral and learning needs of the children.
