The term renocutaneous pertains to the kidneys and the skin. It is a descriptive word to relate to these two organs. It is often used to describe a fistula, particularly renocutaneous fistula. A fistula is a permanent abnormal connection between two epithelialized organs. In the case of renocutaneous fistula, it is a fistula between the kidney and the exterior of the body. This abnormal passageway between the kidney and the skin is a rare complication of renal surgery, trauma, tumors, or chronic urinary tract infection with abscess. Variant: reno-cutaneous. Synonym: nephrocutaneous.
