A two step reaction in which introns are removed from a primary rna transcript and exons are joined together to form a mature mrna. An intron usually contains a clear signal for splicing, but in some cases a splicing signal may be masked by a regulatory protein. This results in alternative splicing. In rare cases a pre-mrna may contain several ambiguous splicing signals, resulting in a few alternatively spliced mrna.
