A segmentation gene whose function is to define the anterior and posterior polarities within each embryonic parasegment.
Supplement
The segmentation polarity genes as the name implies are genes responsible for the polarity within each parasegment of the embryo. Examples are engrailed and gooseberry genes. These genes are expressed sequentially after pair-rule gene.
