significance
An analytical evaluation of the results of a comparative trial or survey. Data yielding a difference in outcome depending on treatment or environmental factors are considered statistically significant if various mathematical procedures indicate there is less than a one in twenty (five percent) chance that the same results would occur through random accident. (In statistical terms this is expressed as p<.05 -or, the p-value is less than0.05.)
