(1) Any salt or ester of vanadic acid.
(2) Any of the corresponding anions, VO3, VO4, or V2O7, containing pentavalent vanadium.

In biological systems vanadate is one of the predominant forms of vanadium, and is known to interfere with a wide variety of enzymes including Ca2+ ATPase and Na+/K+ ATPase.
