Volume pertains to the three-dimensional space that is occupied by an object (i.e. solid, liquid, gas, or plasma). Volumes are determined by calculating the length, width, and height of the occupied space by an object. They are usually expressed in SI units, e.g. cubic centimeter (cm3), cubic meter (m3), liter (L), milliliter (mL), etc. Volume is different from capacity. Capacity pertains to the amount of space that a container can hold and may also be expressed in liters or derived units. Volume may also be used to refer to a large mass or quantity. However, volume is different from mass. The mass is defined as the quantity of matter in an object. Mass per unit volume is the density of an object.
