A large, fluid-filled cistern found on the ventral aspect of the pons.
Supplement
It occurs as a large space filled with cerebrospinal fluid. It is found in front of the pons with the cisterna interpeduncularis.
Word origin: cisterna + Latin pōns, pont-, bridge.
Also called: pontine cistern.
