Metabolic rate

Definition
noun
(1) The rate of metabolism, i.e. the amount of energy used in a certain period.
(2) closely approximated* by the rate of ATP production; ATP production measured by cellular respiration (O2 consumption) or alcoholic fermentation (CO2 production).

  • Only practical when calculating the rate of ATP production in organisms with simple diets (consisting of a single food group).

1 mole CO2 = 1 mole ATP
1 mole O2 = 6.33 moles ATP
Using PV=nRT, 1 mole of gas (CO2 or O2) = 22.4 L or 22400 mL
