(Science: oncogene) One of a family of oncogenes, first identified as transforming genes of harvey and Kirsten murine sarcoma viruses. (name from rat sarcoma because Harvey virus, though a mouse virus, obtained its transforming gene during passage in a rat). Transforming protein coded is p21ras, a gTP-binding protein with GTPase activity, that resembles regulatory G-proteins.
